John Arthur Fraser

1838-1898 Painter, watercolourist, illustrator, photographer. John Arthur Fraser, born in London (England). Studied in London at the R.A. Schools with F.W. Topham and Richard Redgrave. Came to Canada in 1856. In 1860 he was in Montreal working for Notman the photographer who made him a partner in Toronto in 1868. Founding member of the Society of Canadian Artists, Montreal, 1867; of the O.S.A., 1872; and charter member of the R.C.A., 1880. Taught at Ontario School of Art, Toronto, 1878-1883. Went to the United States in 1883, returning in 1886 to paint Rocky Mountains for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Visited England and Scotland in 1888 and exhibited at the R.A. in 1889. Died in New York.
