The Elliott Louis Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of abstract painter Carolyn Stockbridge's first solo exhibition in Canada. The exhibition, 'Grounds For Interpretation' is on view January 4th-29th with the opening reception on January 13th. An illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
Back from a working trip in NYC and Woodstock, Stockbridge has created an exciting body of work charged with immediacy and colour echoing that of the 1950's Abstractionists. "I arrived back to Vancouver infused with energy and excited to jump into this body of work. The magnitude of my NYC experience, as well, time spent with my longtime mentor Henrietta Mantooth reminded me of the open doorway to honest expression that painting can provide.
I am wholly devoted to abstract painting and have been for many years. My real work is knowing how and when to step out of the way; to allow the flow or force of the piece to occur." That sense of flow is lucid in paintings such as 'Red Shape In Landscape' and 'Love To Stay' which render soft mark making and loose areas of colour, while 'Party Party' is a force with vibrant pinks and expressive brush marks that push and pull the space into an emotionally investigated area resulting in a scene reminiscent of a high celebration. Stockbridge is committed to painting as a lifelong journey and says, "Painting is about a mindful balance, just as with life, so it is in painting."
Carolyn Stockbridge was born in Canterbury, Kent, England in 1965 and immigrated to Canada in 1979. She received her BFA from Emily Carr Institute in 2000 and studied at The Art Students League of NYC & Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Stockbridge has collaborated with Canadian artists Etienne Zack, Randy Lee Cutler as well as LA based Nina Rota. She is known additionally for her musical work having composed scores for various independent films & documentaries by Sorella Productions. Her paintings will be on exhibition at the NYArtExpo in March 2011. Carolyn lives and works in Vancouver, Canada.
