Cf PE.102, Combustions originelles 32, color and China Ink on non acid paper circa 1950-1951, brush, washing, dripping and drips, signed with a ball point pen ”Barbeau 1953”.

This is an early painting from the series “Combustions originelles” which were mainly produced in 1950 and 1951, according to a Claude Gauvreau’s paper from the fall of 1951. Like most of the works in the series Combustion originelles, it was not painted in 1953 as it appears on the signature. Often Barbeau's date on his works refers to the time they were signed for an exhibition instead of their date of production, which often occurred a year or two before they were first exhibited. This work is very close to the description of Barbeau’s early Combustion originelles by art critic Rodolphe de Repentigny. The early work form this series were produced before the exhibitions Les rebelles (spring 1950). The drippings found in these works and their warm colors remind those found in the first Combustion originelles purchased by Pauline Shink in July 1951 and of the piece in the Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal collection, purchased from the famous Montreal art collectors, Gérard and Gisèle Lortie who had probably purchased it at Agnès Lefort in 1953. As in the small early acquisition by Pauline Shink, this ink on paper shows a radiation of drippings from a loose knot. This fan–shaped spreading of lines increases the impression of movement and the vibration of the warm colors. This organization of space is current in Barbeau’s work, in paintings as well as in drawings and sculptures. This work, which remained in the artist’s collection, might has been exhibited at Centre d’art de Sainte-Adèle in July or August 1953, where Barbeau taught sculpture to children between 1952 and 1954.
