Stepladders interest me visually but they took on a different meaning for me after the reading of the testimony given at the truth and reconciliation commission in South Africa. In this testimony the stepladder becomes a powerful metaphor for an elevation device to view the truth. The image of a ladder is often used in art to symbolize access to other realities (as in Jacobís ladder). Stepladders are interesting in that they are firmly anchored back to the ground, enabling one a limited elevation or vantage point. They are also the tool of trade for painters and are symbolically synonymous with artists.
