Carolyn Stockbridge

Painting is a compulsion, a struggle and a pleasure. I paint every day and although every piece continues to the next, every time I start a new painting I remember the words of Henrietta Mantooth, a longtime mentor of mine; "…even after painting for more than 40 years, every piece is the beginning of painting and I start all over again." With this in mind I like to think I find varying degrees of new realization in each piece while hoping the painting before me can survive my own workings and re-workings to mirror its own invention.

Biography
Born 1965 (UK) Working in Canada

Carolyn Stockbridge was born in Canterbury, England in 1965 and excelled in painting, drawing and music from an early age. Her family emigrated to Canada in 1979 and by 1982 she had received an entrance scholarship to study at what was then, The Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver.  In the early 1990’s she moved to New York City to pursue concentrated painting studies at The Art Students League. There, she studied under Catherine Redmond, assisted for senior painter Henrietta Mantooth and began to integrate influences of the New York School into her work.

After attending the Otis Art Institute (Los Angeles) for three months in 1998, she returned to The Emily Carr Institute completing a degree in Visual Arts in 2000. Carolyn has shown work in Vancouver, Los Angeles and NYC and is also known as the animator and film music composer for Nina Rota whose experimental films and documentaries receive worldwide recognition.

As well as being committed to her art practice, Carolyn is equally dedicated to animal care and the healing arts. She lives and works in Vancouver.
