1866-1934 Painter. Maurice Galbraith Cullen, born at St John's, Newfoundland. The family moved to Montreal in 1870. At first he studied sculpture with Philippe Hebert. Went to Paris in 1888 and studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (1889-1892).
Exhibited in Paris in 1894-1895; painted at Moret, Giverny, and Le Pouldu; and was associated with Morrice in Venice and Brittany. Returned to Montreal in 1895 and opened a studio there, painting during the summers at Beaupre. Travelled in Europe,
1900-1902, then returned to Montreal. A.R.C.A. in 1899, R.C.A. in 1907. Taught at Art Association of Montreal 1911-1917, 1919-1923. Exhibited with the Canadian Art Club, Toronto, 1908-1915. Visited Newfoundland, 1910-1911. Painted for the Canadian War
Memorials in France, Belgium, and England, 1918. About 1920 he built a painting cabin at Lac Tremblant in the Laurentians. Died at Chambly, Quebec.
