Verbicky's Eastern European roots contribute an underlying raw primitivism to his statements on both the artificial and transitory nature of contemporary urban life. Using infinite expanses of layered color, texture, and subtle symbolism, Verbicky's
work is unrestrained and evocative - drawing the audience into the thoughts and emotions of the artist himself at the time of creation. Largely a dedicated self-taught painter, James Verbicky's work is about the spontaneity and process inherent in
creativity and in daily life.
"CONTINUUM" (theory) .. anything that goes through a gradual transition from one condition, to a different condition without any abrupt changes or "discontinuities". "Continuum" is a statement on my evolution
as an artist along a thin, deep timeline of awareness. My work is the actualization of art serving the purpose of stopping time, allowing one to process and integrate the meaning present in a passing moment. Each piece marks a progression along this
timeline…where one contributes to the next, and so on.
For me, my work is less about what goes on to the canvas, and more about what I take away. As I remove layers, the expanse of each piece reveals itself through deep linear seams, embedded
symbols, objects, and figures… resonant touchstones that parallel the overall human experience. As an abstract expressionist, I work to uncover the atmosphere and energy of each piece. Much like an archeological dig, each discovery marks where I've been
and where I'm heading as an individual through the uncharted territory of today's world.
Each time our eyes open to something new… we are changed… we evolve. If art moves you, you take it with you…it becomes part of your being and it changes you.
I am simply making these experiences part of a more significant existence… a conscious choice I have made in being an artist.
James Verbicky, 34, splits his time between Los Angeles and Canada, where his family emigrated to from Poland.
