Goodridge Roberts


1904-1974 William Goodridge Roberts, born in Barbados of a Canadian literary family. Was brought to Frederiction, New Brunswick, in infancy. Studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal, and the Art Students League, New York, under John Sloan, Max Weber, and Boardman Robinson. After a period in Ottawa he went to Montreal, then taught at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, 1933-1936. Taught at the school of the Art Association of Montreal 1939-1943 and after 1945. As an official war artist with the Air Force (1943-1945) he painted in England. A.R.C.A. in 1952, R.C.A. in 1956. Won a government scholarship, and worked in France, 1953-1955. Lived in Montreal. Painter of landscape, figures, and still life. Resident artist, University of New Brunswick, 1959-1960.
