Robert Field


1769-1819 Painter, engraver, miniaturist, watercolourist. Robert Field, born possibly in Gloucestershire. Admitted to the R.A. schools as a student of engraving in 1790. Went to America in 1794 and after a few months in Baltimore moved to Philidelphia (1794-1800). In 1800 he was in Washington and worked as a portrait engraver and miniaturist in Georgetown and maryland until 1805 when he went to Boston. In 1808 he moved to Halifax where he was the leading portrait painter. Exhibited at the R.A., 1810. In 1816 he left for Jamaica where he died of fever.
