For this piece I wanted to create a portrait of a stone that captures the character and significance of the material. For centuries portraits of significant people have been carved out of stone. I was considering stone at a sub-atomic level where the molecular activity of the stone is in constant motion. This is the life force of energy of the material. Stone offers the illusion of permanence though it is constantly transforming and eroding just as we are. The title, “Impermanence – Portrait of a Stone”, talks about the permanence of change, the impermanence of the viewer’s mortality in contrast to that of a stone.
