Prior to teaching drawing and painting part time at Capilano University, Nancy Boyd worked as a designer and architectural renderer in Vancouver, most notably for Expo 86. Nancy is still effected by those influences and an
underlying love of drawing. She maintains a fascination with 'views' and the conflation of scale between the microscopic to the cosmic. Nancy's work has shifted into a more open ended process, exploring evolving life forms and some of
the sciences that investigate them, including MRI scans, botanical/microscopic imagery and quantum physics.
Her most recent series in encaustic and mixed media, Phylum, Genus, Morphology and Random reflect that ongoing fascination with science,
spirit and aesthetics. The introduction of somewhat volatile media, encaustic and heat-sensitive inks, amplifies the unpredictable, the almost 'alchemical' aspect of the new work.
Nancy has shown extensively around Greater Vancouver in the
public galleries of Richmond, Surrey, Burnaby and Coquitlam. In addition, her work has been exhibited in the U.S., Japan and Australia as well as Vancouver, Kelowna and Calgary.
Against The Cold Drawings With the threat
of frost in the air, my neighbours wrapped their fragile grasses in large canvas tarps. I was taken with the tenderness and beauty that was highlighted with this protective cloaking, a process reminiscent of Christo and Jean Claude's intriguing
projects. Sadly one of the two men who nurtured the delicate plants died soon after I started the series of drawings. The series, Against The Cold, is in memory of that man, Hugh McLellan.
